Exchange-Striction Driven Ultrafast Nonthermal Lattice Dynamics in NiO

We use femtosecond electron diffraction to study ultrafast lattice dynamics in the highly correlated antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor NiO. Using scattering vector ($Q$) dependence of Bragg diffraction, we introduce $Q$-resolved effective temperatures describing transient lattice. identify a nonthermal state with preferential displacement O compared Ni ions, which occurs within $\ensuremath{\sim}0.3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ps}$ and persists for 25 ps. associate this changes AFM exchange striction-induced distortion, supported by observation $Q$ asymmetry Friedel pairs. Our highlights role spin-lattice coupling routes towards control spin order.
